In September 2020, Amco Giffen appointed Jack Tighe Ltd to carry out the mechanical preparation and application of protective coatings to the footbridge as illustrated in the photographs.

Due to the significant lead content present in the existing paint system on site and the potential risk to operatives during the removal of the paint system, the Control of Lead at Work Regulations 2002 applied. A decontamination unit was provided on site by Jack Tighe Ltd.

All Jack Tighe Ltd operatives received a site induction from Amco Giffen to ensure safe working practices and site PPE requirements were complied with.

Access to the site works were via mobile aluminium towers. All towers were erected by Jack Tighe Ltd qualified PASMA personnel.

The work was completed in two weekly visits and three Jack Tighe Ltd operatives were deployed.

Visit 1 We jet washed the bridge using a 4000psi jet washing machine to remove any contaminants and mechanically prepared the surface to ST3 standard. We then applied Chemco RL500pf light grey undercoat to the full structure to achieve 250 microns dry film thickness.

Visit2 Working closely with the steelwork fabricators, we painted all steel repairs to bring them up to the standard of the rest of the bridge. The bridge was then finished in a two-tone colour scheme of blue and grey: –

  • Jotun Hartop XP Blue to all framework posts and handrails achieving 50 microns dry film thickness
  • Jotun Hartop XP Grey to all lattice areas achieving 50 microns dry film thickness.

We liaised with the steelwork fabricators and kept one man on site for some extra shifts, to ensure that our client and the independent paint inspector were happy with the final quality of our work.

The work was completed on time, to specification and within budget.
